Programs
In late February, Los Angeles was host to the 14th Conference on Retroviruses and Opportunistic Infections (CROI). APLA was the official host of a live webcast on CROI at the Bonaventure Hotel on Wednesday, February 28. APLA’s lead treatment educator, Brian Risley, conducted interviews with clinicians and national treatment activists for insertion into a live broadcast on Dish Network, as well as a follow-up DVD to be distributed internationally.
Additionally, Brian and APLA Ambassador Council member Lee Klosinski co-authored an analysis of the conference for IN Los Angeles. Reaction to the conference from Board member Eric Daar, M.D., was featured in summary coverage from the Kaiser Daily HIV/AIDS Report.
The February 14 launch of LifeLube.org, a project of the Sexual Health Xchange, continued to be covered this month, with hits on Gay.com and online at POPNography.com. The Sexual Health Xchange is a partnership of APLA, AIDS Action Committee of Massachusetts and the AIDS Foundation of Chicago.
The first-ever National Native HIV/AIDS Awareness Day was held on March 21. APLA’s Elton Naswood, who coordinates the Red Circle Project, was interviewed for a story that ran in the Billings (Mont.) Gazette. The story was also picked up by Kaiser.
Frontiers ran a story about prevention activities for gay black men through In the Meantime Men’s Group. Included in the story is a reference to “My Life, My Style,” the program for young gay men for which APLA is a partner.
A Los Angeles Times story about a confidentiality breach in a mailing from the State Office of AIDS featured a quote from Client Services Director Jeff Bailey. An APLA client was among several featured in a UCLA Bruin story about a UCLA project that paired student photographers with people living with HIV/AIDS. The class, for which APLA staff helped coordinate subjects, was conducted renowned chronicler of HIV/AIDS in South Africa Gideon Mendel. (A similar story ran in the Los Angeles Times.)
APLA’s recent lobbying activities in Washington, DC, with partners including Gay Men’s Health Crisis and AIDS Foundation of Chicago, were the subject of a story in the New York Blade.
Former APLA Executive Director Jimmy Loyce has been featured in recent stories in the Bay Area Reporter, as the Office of AIDS in San Francisco is subsumed by the Public Health Department. Mr. Loyce will become interim director of the Black Coalition on AIDS.
