FORMER EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF PRESIDENTIAL ADVISORY COUNCIL ON HIV/AIDS, DANIEL C. MONTOYA, NAMED DIRECTOR, GOVERNMENT AFFAIRS FOR
AIDS PROJECT LOS ANGELES

Los Angeles -- AIDS Project Los Angeles is pleased to announce the appointment of Daniel C. Montoya as Director, Government Affairs. Former President Clinton named Mr. Montoya the Executive Director of the Presidential Advisory Council on HIV/AIDS in 1997 where he advised the President and other high-ranking government officials on AIDS-related issues and policy.

As Director of Government Affairs for APLA, Mr. Montoya will have a major role and influence in shaping HIV-related public policy at the local, state, federal and international levels. "Daniel brings incredible experience and knowledge to APLA," stated Craig E. Thompson, Executive Director, APLA.

"We're excited about what this selection means for people affected by HIV," affirmed APLA Board Co-Chairs, Dr. Eric Bing and Leslie A. Margolin.

Mr. Montoya was responsible for overseeing the various HIV/AIDS related issues that were important to the council including managing staff support as the council developed and monitored policy recommendations made to the President. He acted as liaison for the council to provide policy advice and assistance to the President, Vice President, Secretary of HHS, Director of the Office of National AIDS Policy and other federal agencies, state agencies and community-based organizations. He supervised the development of an annual report to the President concerning HIV/AIDS issues that evaluated the nation's efforts to combat HIV/AIDS.

" I'm excited about bringing the experience I had in Washington to an AIDS service organization," stated Montoya. "I gained so much knowledge in my role with the President's Advisory Council on HIV/AIDS, that I hope to translate that to benefit people who are at risk or living with HIV and AIDS. Mr. Montoya has worked with numerous local, state and national AIDS-related organizations focusing on care and services, housing, complementary therapies and human and civil rights, having served as a client, volunteer and board member

As a person living with HIV for over 14 years, Mr. Montoya is especially sensitive to the needs and hopes of people living with HIV/AIDS.

Each year, AIDS Project Los Angeles provides direct services to more than 10,000 men, women and children living with HIV and AIDS in Los Angeles County. Services include a food bank, professional dental care, housing assistance, child care, transportation, mental health counseling, case management, home health care and Adult and Child Buddy support. APLA also provides extensive treatment and prevention education and advocacy on local, state and federal AIDS-related legislation.
