AIDS PROJECT LOS ANGELES TO DISTRIBUTE 10,000 AIDS AWARENESS POSTERS AND MADONNA CD'S ON WORLD AIDS DAY, DECEMBER 1, 2000
Los Angeles County High School Students to Receive World AIDS Day Package
Los Angeles -- Of the 34.3 million people worldwide, 1.3 million children 15 and under are living with HIV and AIDS around the world today according to 1999 estimates by UNAIDS. In the United States, it is estimated that more than 40,000 Americans are infected each year. Half of those infections are among young people under 24. On World AIDS Day, December 1, AIDS Project Los Angeles (APLA) will distribute 10,000 AIDS awareness posters to high school students throughout Los Angeles County.
"The global AIDS epidemic is staggering. We must continue our efforts in the U.S. with the treatment of AIDS and HIV prevention across our nation and the rest of the world. Prevention Education and condom accessibility are key factors in stopping the spread of HIV among our youth," said Craig Thompson Executive Director of AIDS Project Los Angeles.
Maverick Records donated 10,000 Madonna CDs. Photographer David Lachapelle donated a photograph of Madonna from his book and San Francisco Brian Moore of Ozone Advertising and Jonina Skaggs of Skaggs Design created the poster artwork and song, AIDS Cares Not. The World AIDS Day package will be distributed to high schools throughout Los Angeles County including: Hamilton High, Oakwood School, Marshall High, Poly Technical High, Hollywood High.
AIDS Project Los Angeles, a non-profit community-based organization, provides direct services to more than 8,000 men, women and children living with HIV and AIDS in Los Angeles County. Services include a food bank, a dental clinic, housing assistance, transportation, mental health counseling, case management, home health care and Adult and Child Buddy Support. APLA also provides extensive treatment and prevention education and advocacy on local, state and federal AIDS-related legislation.
