Grand Opening of Our New
Gleicher/Chen Health Center

October 1, 2014
9 a.m. - 12 p.m.
Remarks at 11 a.m.

What are we doing?

In January 2014, the Affordable Care Act brought health insurance to millions in California who were previously uninsured. To meet this unprecedented demand, APLA Health & Wellness is Bringing Care to Our Communities by expanding to provide comprehensive medical, dental, and mental health services to the LGBT community while strengthening our longstanding commitment to serve those living with HIV/AIDS.

In Bringing Care to Our Communities, we are opening the Gleicher/Chen Health Center in Baldwin Hills, complete with medical, dental, and mental health/substance abuse counseling. In addition, we are expanding oral health care at our Wilshire Dental Clinic and mental health services at The David Geffen Center. Once complete, these new and renovated facilities will bring more than 15,000 square feet of state-of-the-art clinical space and comprehensive wrap-around services to support over 5,000 new patients.

What's happening now?

Vallerie Wagner, Chief Operating Officer of APLA Health & Wellness, has recorded several video tours to give you an idea of the type of work involved and progress we're making toward renovating and expanding our clinic space in Baldwin Hills.

Phase 1: Health Education & Prevention Services Suite

Prevention services have moved to their new suite in the same Baldwin Hills complex. These services include the African American Gay Men’s Health Initiative (AAGHMI), the Crystal Methamphetamine Program, Mpowerment (our youth HIV prevention program), the Red Circle Project (working with the Native American / Alaska Native community), and Project TND (Toward No Drug Abuse).

Phase 2: Demolition and Construction

Renovation is underway. When completed, we will have a beautiful 7,000 square foot medical clinic with six patient exam rooms, a treatment room, a laboratory and dispensary, counseling rooms to provide mental health and substance abuse counseling and other non-clinical services that aim to increase access to healthcare and improve health outcomes, and nursing and other provider offices. We will also be bringing our almost 30 year expertise in providing oral healthcare by including four dental chairs, dental laboratory and sterilization rooms plus digital x-ray capabilities.
