Leonard Peterson

In 1983, Leonard Peterson was deeply affected by the severity of the HIV/AIDS epidemic and sought to support a Los Angeles-based charity fighting the disease. Peterson sent a series of checks to a number of organizations, and he was struck that only one responded: AIDS Project Los Angeles.
Since then, Peterson has been an exceptional donor to APLA. In fact, in an act of unequalled personal generosity, he initially loaned a substantial sum of money to underwrite the cost of the world's first AIDS Walk (which benefited APLA.) Peterson continues to give regularly to AIDS Walk Los Angeles and has also been generous with his time, volunteering to answer phones at APLA and serving as a memeber of the agency's Board of Directors.
In addition to his direct donations, Peterson supports the agency through stock gifts. A former mechanical engineer and part owner of MSC Software, he regularly donates shares from his firm to APLA.
"It's a great way to support the organization," he said.
Peterson also notes that he is "particularly impressed by the work of APLA volunteers." In recognition of his generosity of time and talent, APLA annually present an outstanding volunteer with its Leonard Peterson Volunteer Service Award.
"Leonard is an exceptionally generous person and embodies the spirit of giving recognized by the award," said Jim Williams, program manager of APLA's Volunteer Resources.
Asked how he would describe APLA's work to a propective donor, Peterson says that the work speaks for itself. From multiple perspectives - as a donor, volunteer, and board member - he says that APLA is simply "a good organization doing good work" in the community.
APLA is tremendously fortunate to have such a generous, committed supporter as a member of the APLA Leadership Council, a group of committed supporters who annually contribute a minimum of $1,000 (unrelated to special events) to the Annual Fund.
