Northern California Grantmakers established AIDS Partnership California (APC) to specifically address the continuing crisis of HIV/AIDS in the communities of color throughout the state of California.

Resources listed below include a comprehensive list of prevention programs in California, and outside of California too. They are organized by intervention level and populations served.

- Gay Men and Men who have Sex with Men

AIDS Project of the East Bay

Target Population: HIV+African American Men Who Have Sex With Men. Early focus on outreach at popular venues, establishing linkages with HIV testing programs, and developing peer-to-peer recruitment protocols. Group level activities via weekly drop-in education and social support (peer-led) groups, as well as community social events and a weekend retreat. For more information, call (510) 663-7979.

Asian and Pacific Islander Wellness Center

Target Population: Asian and Pacific Islander Gay Men and Transgendered Persons. Multi-faceted intervention that includes social support and community-building (monthly theme-based events, annual events), a general health and wellness program (nutrition and exercise information and support), treatment and education workshops (Basic, Intermediate, and Advanced), group psychotherapy (a series of three 6 to 8-week sessions offering support and problem-solving skills), and individual psychotherapy. Bay Men Project: The Center for AIDS Prevention Studies,

Target Population: Gay and Bisexual Men with HIV. The program gives HIV+ men a chance to meet and socialize with each other, and offers a safe environment where these individuals can have open discussions about sex, dating, personal health, and other issues relevant to their lives. Target Population: Men with HIV. This program offers a creative way to meet other men in a friendly, non-judgmental environment. Whether you are looking for a love connection, a new friend, or someone to talk to, this event is a great way to make it happen.

Mano a Mano: Bienestar Human Services

Target Population: Monolingual Spanish-speaking Men who have Sex with Men. Mano a Mano is a five-session workshop series (2 series for couples and 3 for singles) facilitated by a peer counselor and a prevention case manager. Topics include sexual orientation, sexual roles, disclosure and coming out issues, the interplay of desire, passion, and guilt, relationships and communication, and, finally, community action steps and leadership development.

Positive Force: Stop AIDS Project

Target Population: Gay and Bisexual Men with HIV. Positive Force seeks to empower all positive gay and bisexual men of all ages, ethnicities and economic backgrounds with the resources to build a community that encourages and promotes nurturing, supportive and invigorating relationships between gay and bisexual men with HIV.

Incarcerated Populations

Centerforce

Target Population: Incarcerated Individuals with HIV. As part of a CDC-funded initiative, Centerforce offers a two-week, eight-session health promotion intervention for inmates with HIV preparing to be released from prison.

Communities of Color

The Bridge Project: California State Office of AIDS
Target Population: People of Color with HIV. Located in early intervention program (EIP) sites in communities of color, the Bridge Project links individuals to prevention and care services via peer counselors trained as treatment educators. Bridge workers assist clients in identifying and overcoming barriers to entering and remaining in care, and also reach and re-engage individuals who have been previously lost to care in EIP. Substance Users

Choosing Life: Empowerment, Action, Results (CLEAR) UCLA Center for HIV Identification, Prevention, and Treatment Services

Target Population: Youth with HIV. Choosing Life: Empowerment, Action, Results (CLEAR), funded by the National Institute on Drug Abuse, is a project that seeks to learn more about youth living with HIV, their relationships and health, how they cope with problems, and how drug and alcohol use impacts sexual and other risk behaviors that may lead to the transmission of HIV. CLEAR will also assess the cost effectiveness of delivering these interventions so that they may be widely disseminated to HIV/AIDS service providers across the country and around the world. Interventions for SeroPositive IDUs: Research & Evaluation (INSPIRE)

Target Population: Intravenous Drug Users. INSPIRE is a behavioral intervention to lower sexual and drug use risk, increase access to care, and increase adherence to HAART (Highly Active Anti-Retroviral Therapy) regimens. For more information call (415) 597-9267.

Seropositive Urban Drug Injectors Study (SUDIS)

Target Population: Intravenous Drug Users. The Seropositive Urban Drug Injectors Study (SUDIS), known in the Bay Area as the VENUS Study, was a descriptive multi-site study of IDUs with HIV in the San Francisco and New York metropolitan areas. SUDIS was conducted to fill a gap in the knowledge about sexual transmission risk among IDUs with HIV. For more information, call (415) 597-9100.

Tarzana Treatment Center

Target Population: Individuals with HIV who are in substance abuse treatment. The Tarzana Treatment Center provides prevention services to individuals who have had HIV for less than two years.

Women Alive

Target Population: women with HIV of all ages. Women Alive provides support groups for young women (under 21 years of age) with HIV, women with HIV, women with HIV recovering from addictions, and group and individual psychotherapy.
