The Diffusion of Effective Behavioral Interventions (DEBI) Initiative is designed to bring research-based, community- and group-level HIV prevention interventions that have been proven to be successful to community-based service providers and state and local health departments. The goal of the DEBI Initiative is to enhance the capacity to implement these effective interventions at the state and local levels to reduce the spread of HIV and STDs and to promote healthy behaviors.
Community-level Interventions
Community-level interventions seek to change the attitudes, norms, and values of an entire community/target population as well as the social and environmental context of risk behaviors of the target population/community. Here are examples of community level interventions:
- Holistic Health Recovery Program (HHRP+)
- Popular Opinion Leader (POL)
- Community PROMISE
- MPowerment
- Real AIDS Prevention Program (RAPP)
Group-level Interventions
Group-level interventions seek to change individual behavior within the context of a group setting. Some of these interventions are also complemented with individual-level interventions. Here are some examples of group-level interventions:
- Healthy Relationships (HR)
- Many Men, Many Voices (3MV)
- Safety Counts
- SISTA
- Street Smart
- Together Learning Choices(TLC)
- VOICES/VOCES
Structural Interventions
Structural interventions aim at modifying the social, economic, and political structures and systems in which we live. These may affect legislation, media, health care, and the market place. Structural interventions directly alter the physical environments in which people live, work, play, and have sex, to help reduce risk. To learn more, go to www.effectiveinterventions.org.
